Out of Country/Province

Out of Province vehicles require an inspection. Bring the ownership documents to New Urban Registry to receive the request form from the Motor Vehicle system. Once the vehicle has successfully passed this inspection it is eligible for Alberta registration.

If the vehicle is being imported from another country, documentation from Canada Customs is required to prove that the car is eligible for registration. Customs will provide you with the necessary forms when the vehicle first enters the country. For Canadian residents who wish to import a vehicle from the USA or other countries, please visit the Registrar of Imported Vehicles.

Registration Renewals

Sign up for a renewal reminder through email as the government has discontinued mailing our reminders.

Insurance documents can be accepted electronically or a faxed version can be sent to New Urban Registry at 403-262-8695.

Plate Exchange

You can have a plate exchange done if your old plate is worn out. The owner of the vehicle must be present in the office or a letter of authorization will be required.

Change of Address for Vehicle Registrations

Albertans are required by law to update addresses on both their driver’s licence and vehicle registration within 14 days of moving. New Urban Registry will reprint the vehicle registration after the change on the driver’s licence has been made. Not updating your driver’s licence at the same time as registration could result in a fine if discovered by law enforcement.

Cancelling your Vehicle Registration

To cancel your licence plates and registration, you can visit New Urban Registry or send
in your request if you are no longer in the province.

  • Out of Province: If you are now living out of province, fax or email a copy of your identification, a fully completed Registration Cancellation or Licence Plate Declaration Form, and a money order made payable to New Urban Registry for $9.45 (or you can include credit card info).
